100+ things to do in Dominica - #3

Here's your next segment of 100+ things to do in Dominica:
11. Visit the Dominica Museum
This museum is a must-see! Admire the well-designed exhibits and read the clearly worded signage. Get a good overview and understanding of Dominica's history in an hour or less or take your time!

12. Go to the New Market
On Saturday mornings, the Roseau Market by the riverside is the place to be! Purchase a pineapple. Eat some bakes. Buy a bouquet of local flowers. It's a riot of colorful fruits, vegetables and flavours.

13. See the historic churches
Observe the Creole architecture and admire the Roseau Cathedral on Virgin Lane. Beside it is the Methodist Church. St. George's Anglican Church opposite Fort Young Hotel was once demolished by a hurricane!

14. Stroll through the Botanical Gardens
Spend some time in the beautiful Botanical Gardens. It is home to about 50 types of trees. Take "Jack's Walk" up to Morne Bruce for a bird's eye view of Roseau. Catch a weekend cricket match.

15. Buy souvenirs at the Old Market
Check out the local T-shirts, tropical wraps and clothing, incense, pottery, music and more! The Old Market is right behind the Tourist Office. It was once a site for slave auctions and punishments.

16. View local art
Dominica's natural beauty has been captured in art! The Old Mill Cultural Center in Canefield was once part of a big sugar and lime plantation. There, the works of some local artists are on display. They can also tell you about other small studios in Roseau.

17. Observe a natural iguana habitat
The grounds at the Hummingbird Inn in Morne Daniel, as well as the Castaways Beach in Mero are ideal venues to observe this large harmless lizard. As they are daytime feeders, stop by for a drink and see if you can spot one in the trees or basking in the sun.

18. Get around by local bus
It's convenient, economical and fun! Take the bus to Portsmouth, Calibishie or Trafalgar for only a few dollars. Be sure to ask about various destinations, return times and the exact fare. Bus stop locations can be obtained at the Tourist Information Office on the Bay Front or at any hotel.

19. Watch for whales
Dominica's deep warm waters are enjoyed by over 20 species of these big mammals, including a resident population of female and juvenile Sperm Whales. The Anchorage Dive Center, as part of a research facility, has erected a skeleton of a beached(washed ashore) female sperm whale found on the island's northeast coast.

20. Hike up to Morne Anglais
Head south from Roseau and turn up the Giraudel Road by the Texaco Station at Castle Comfort. At Giraudel, stop by the school and ask for directions. This two-hour hike to the top has an easy start, but gets more difficult closer to the summit. A certified guide would be helpful. Your reward is the view!
